Hiraizumi

駅に降り立った瞬間、なんとなく思いました。平泉の雰囲気、好き！

The moment I stepped off the train, I knew: I like Hiraizumi.

平泉といえば真っ先に思いつくのは源義経。何度もドラマになっているこの時代、私の中では大河ドラマ「鎌倉殿の13人」での菅田将暉義経と田中泯藤原秀衡の印象がとても強い。あの、懐の大きい、大物感満載の藤原氏が治めていた地域かぁ…と勝手にドラマのイメージだけでしみじみしてしまった。

天気も良かったのでレンタルサイクルして回ろうと思ったらなんと私の前で売り切れ！レンタルショップの店主さんっぽい人が「みなさーーん、あと3台です！後ろの方の人はもうないかも！ごめんなさい！」ととても嬉しそうに叫んでいてあまりにも嬉しそうなのでこっちも少し笑顔になってしまった。盛況でよかったね。

Hiraizumi always makes me think of Minamoto no Yoshitsune first. This era’s been dramatised countless times, but for me, it’s the NHK drama “The 13 Lords of the Shogun”—Masaki Suda as Yoshitsune and Min Tanaka as Fujiwara no Hidehira. That generous, commanding presence Hidehira had… So this is where the mighty Fujiwara clan ruled. 

The weather was lovely, so I fancied cycling round. But all bikes were rented out right before my turn! The shop owner (I think?) cheerfully announced, “Everyone! Only three left! Those at the back—you might miss out! Sorry!” He looked so pleased that I couldn’t help smiling too. Good on you, mate.

立派なお寺って心を洗ってくれるよなーとほんと思う。それと同時に、これだけ立派だと、やっぱ権力的なものも感じて複雑になる。平安時代にここにいた権力者たちは、このゆったりとした景色を見ながら何を考えていたのだろう。

Grand temples really do cleanse the soul, don’t they? Though I also can’t help feeling the weight of authority they represent. What were the powerful figures who lived here in the Heian period thinking as they gazed out at this peaceful landscape?
