宮沢賢治美術館を出て、天気が良いし山の中の気持ちいい散歩道がありそうだったので歩いて帰ろうかと思ったそのとき…。

「クマ注意」—こんな観光地にクマでるの！？

Leaving the Miyazawa Kenji Museum, the weather was lovely and it looked like there’d be a pleasant woodland path, so I thought I’d walk back. That’s when..

“Beware of Bears” — Bears? Here? In a tourist spot!?

さすがに一人で歩き出すのは気が引けたのだけれど、周りにけっこう他の観光客がいて、10名くらいでゾロゾロと歩き出したのでしれっとついていくことに。宮沢賢治博物館のすぐ裏手は、緑の多い公演だった。ポランの広場、というらしい。

しばらく歩くと「イーハトーヴォ館」、さらに道路沿いに歩くと「童話村」。童話村は広い公園のようになっていて、フィルムのようにキラキラした材質のアートがたくさん並べてあって、どうやら夜にくるときれいらしい。

また、何かのイベントなのか、ステージでは東北の伝統芸能らしい舞踊が披露されていた。

I was rather reluctant to set off on my own – then, there were quite a few other tourists about, and when a group of about 10 people started walking, I casually tagged along. Just behind the Miyazawa Kenji Museum was a leafy park — called the Polan Square.

After a short walk, I reached the Ihatov center, and further along the road was something called “Fairytale Village”. It’s laid out like a large park with loads of art installations made from this film-like, shimmering material — apparently the view would look more beautiful at night.

There was also some sort of event on, with what looked like traditional Tohoku performing arts being showcased on stage.

童話村からタクシーを拾って、帰りに寄ったのは「イギリス海岸」。宮沢賢治が北上川の泥岩層の川床に付けた名称だそうで、イギリスのドーバー海峡の白亜の海岸を連想したそうな。いや、今は景色が変わってしまったのかもしれないけど、ドーバーには全く見えん。

でも天気がよく散歩にはちょうどよかったので、ホテルまで歩いて帰ることに。川沿いを歩くの、なんでこんなに好きなんだろう。

I caught a taxi from the Fairytale Village and stopped off at the “English Coast” on the way back. Apparently it’s a name Miyazawa Kenji gave to the mudstone riverbed of the Kitakami River, which reminded him of the white cliffs of Dover. I mean… perhaps the landscape’s changed since then… but…nah, it looked nothing like Dover!

Still, the weather was lovely and perfect for a stroll, so I decided to walk back to the hotel. I looooove walking along rivers…
